About Institute of Tropical Medicine

The Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp (ITM) is a world-renowned academic institution that focuses on conducting and promoting scientific research, professional and academic education, as well as scientific, medical and societal services in the area of tropical diseases and global health, with special attention to underserved populations. The ITM has a staff of more than 500 and a balance sheet total of around EUR 80 million. The income of the ITM comes from Flemish and federal government grants, externally funded projects and own activities.

 

The legal form is that of a Foundation of Public Utility, in which the Board of Governors has full authority. The governors are appointed by the General Council, which consists of members appointed by a number of authorities and the Flemish universities and representatives of other interest groups, including staff, students and alumni and the institutional partners in the South and North. This General Council has the statutory authority to ensure compliance with the mission, vision, values and core tasks of the ITM, and to appoint, evaluate and dismiss the members of the Board of Governors.

 

Partners worldwide

ITM collaborates with many institutions globally and works with 24 partners across three continents on a long-term structural basis. These partnerships are funded from the Belgian Directorate-General for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid (DGD).

Role purpose

The Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) is seeking to recruit three new members to its Board of Governors. To further enhance our global perspective and institutional diversity, we are ideally seeking international candidates for two of these three available positions.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

As a Board Member, you will provide strategic leadership, independent oversight, and missiondriven guidance to ensure ITM maintains its role as a worldclass centre for research, education, and clinical excellence in tropical medicine and global health.

 

Strategic Governance

  • Shape, guide, and monitor ITM’s longterm Strategic Plan.
  • Ensure the Institute remains responsive to emerging global health challenges, scientific developments, and technological innovation.

Fiduciary & Risk Oversight

  • Serve as a fiduciary steward of ITM’s financial health and ethical integrity.
  • Oversee robust risk management processes across all operations and programmes.

Mission Advocacy

  • Act as a highlevel ambassador for ITM.
  • Leverage your network to enhance visibility, partnerships, and influence across the global health ecosystem.

 

Technical/Experiential Requirements

We are seeking leaders who possess deep expertise in at least one of the following five priority areas:

  • Innovation, digital health, and research valorisation – Proven experience in these areas with a focus on translational impact.
  • International partnership, global science, and health diplomacy – A background in international partnerships and the ability to navigate complex global health policy landscapes.
  • Fundraising, philanthropy, and international donor systems – Expertise in fundraising, philanthropy, and navigating the international donor ecosystem.
  • Business sector experience – Strong networks within the biopharmaceutical, medical technology, or biomedical innovation sectors.
  • Strategic communication and stakeholder engagement – Excellence in stakeholder engagement and institutional marketing to amplify ITM's societal impact.

 

Profile

  • Candidates need not meet every criterion, but should bring deep expertise in at least one priority area.
  • Strong alignment with ITM’s mission and values.
  • Prior board or governance experience is highly preferred.
  • Candidates must demonstrate the capacity to fulfil all associated time commitments as outlined below.

 

Terms of Appointment

The mandate of the members of the Board of Governors, except for the Executive Director and the General Manager, is four years, unless the General Council decides to appoint one or more members of the Board of Governors for a shorter period.

 

A person may be reappointed as a Board member but may not serve more than 12 years as a member of the Board of Governors (whether continuously or intermittently), except for the Executive Director and the General Manager.

 

Time Commitment

Six (6) meetings of around three (3) hours each year at the ITM headquarters in Antwerp, including one strategic meeting and one General Council meeting.
