CropLife seeks to listen to member issues, and the communications director will integrate these issues and reflect on best practice content for all members to call upon.


Director of Communications 

CropLife International's Director of Communications will set and guide the strategy for all internal and external communication activities, including strategic communications, risk and issues management, media relations, internal communications, thought leadership communications and campaign management and proactive positioning of CropLife International. The Director of Communications will ensure that CropLife International has an excellent reputation with key stakeholders and is viewed as the primary source, disseminator, and conduit of information within its network and constituent base. Reporting to Vice President Public Affairs & Communications, the Director of Communications will work closely with the President and CEO and the senior leadership team within the organization as the communications partner on a variety of strategic initiatives.
 
The Communications Director will lead the generation of online content, reflecting a refreshed strategy with messaging that engages audience segments and leads to measurable action. They will put communications vehicles in place to re-establish CropLife's stakeholder members' priorities, supporting advocacy and partnership, creating momentum and awareness, and testing the effectiveness of communications activities. They will manage the development, distribution, and maintenance of all newsletters, brochures, and the public website; track and measure the level of engagement within the network over time and manage all media contact. This includes support to the CE and senior leadership team in developing speeches, public forum presentations and key messages and content for industry events.
 
CropLife International seeks an accomplished Director of Communications who has at least ten years of communications experience, ideally in a leadership role within a company or association, and covering areas such as message development, media relations, internal and external communications with stakeholders and members. This includes taking scientific and policy knowledge, transforming it into exciting and useful messages, and disseminating it to the right audiences through the best distribution channels. CropLife seeks and an individual familiar with partnership development and who is able to communicate the integrate the technicalities of sustainable agriculture into the wider agriculture forums externally and through the membership group internally. The Director of Communications will understand the need to interface between members of the association and be able to translate and align communication strategies within the partnership group.
 

Key Responsibilities: 

Strategic Communications
  • Lead the internal and external communications of CropLife International's corporate strategy, positioning the industry as a thought leader in sustainable agriculture.
  • Lead communication strategies and policy position development for CropLife International and the global association network on issues related to sustainable agriculture, climate change, chemical management and food security and other related issues.
  • Develop an annual, integrated strategic communications plan that promotes consistent messaging and enhances CropLife International's reputation and brand and mitigates reputational risk and establishes CropLife as a thought leader in sustainable agriculture.
Conduct Campaigns
  • Deliver communication and outreach campaigns for the global CropLife network to address challenges in the stewardship of crop protection products, regulatory challenges, intellectual property protection, investment in innovation and countering illegal product trade.
  • Identify emerging issues faced by CropLife International, translate these into internal and external communications opportunities, and develop strategies to support these opportunities.
  • Develop social and digital media strategies leveraging CropLife International platforms on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.
Internal and external communication
  • Provide communications counsel and support to the President & CEO and the CropLife International leadership team.
  • Work closely and align with all other key functions and ensure integrated communications, content and messaging.
  • Prepare strategy and content for industry leadership platforms and demonstrate senior speech writing capabilities.
  • Ensure all strategic communications to employees, stakeholders, and other audiences reflect and support CropLife International's purpose, vision, values and operating plan priorities.
  • Coordinate issue management services and provide regular updates to senior management on issues pertaining to the plant science industry.
  • Conduct research and analysis of special reports and/or publications that potentially impact the plant science industry.
  • Initiate and oversee the production of monthly newsletters (internal and external), articles, news releases, issue alerts, brochures and other communications documents.
  • Analyze and report CropLife International results and achievements to member company presidents, CEOs and external stakeholders.
Consensus Building
  • Manage member-driven committees, including the Communications Steering Committee, to develop and deliver annual operating plans and long-term strategies with direct budget oversight.
Budget Management
  • Establish annuals plans and budget.
  • Coordinate projects, report on impacts and deliverables and manage related budgets.
     

Professional Experience and Qualifications:

  • Ten or more years of experience in communications; preferably brings work experience in the field of agriculture/food industry and/or a related association.
  • Understanding and experience in communicating on a broad range of sustainability topics.
  • Experience in developing and implementing communications strategies and thought leadership campaigns.
  • Demonstrate evidence of senior relationships with key media and strategic partners in the field of agriculture/food industry and/or a related association
  • Excellent writing/editing, speech writing, message development and verbal communication skills.
  • Deep understanding of internal as well as external communications tactics.
  • History of working with a wide variety of partners in a collaborative and inclusive style.
  • A strong track record as an implementer who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently and can work in an integrated way with other functions.

Terms of Appointment 


The role is remunerated well and has a full benefits package. Reporting line to Vice President for Public Affairs & Communications, they must be located either in Brussels at HQ or within commuting distance in Europe to spend substantial time at the Brussels HQ.
