Role purpose
This is a role for a board member with deep legal and governance expertise. This individual will help building the legal backbone of the organisation while ensuring its governance practices uphold the highest standards of integrity and accountability.
Key Experience and Background
- Senior legal professional with experience in nonprofit or humanitarian sector.
- Prior experience advising or serving on boards.
- Strong understanding of governance codes, board responsibilities, and legal compliance.
- Familiarity with key legal and regulatory considerations in the humanitarian or international development.

As a board member with legal and governance expertise, this individual will:
- Advise on the development of the organisation’s legal structure and foundational governance documents.
- Support the establishment of policies and procedures that promote accountability, transparency, and ethical conduct.
- Help the board stay compliant with regulatory requirements and emerging legal risks.
- Provide oversight and guidance on issues related to safeguarding, data protection, partnership agreements, and cross-border operations.
- Promote a culture of good governance that reflects both legal standards and humanitarian principles.
Time Commitment
Board meetings will be held quarterly (3 virtually and one likely in the Netherlands. Overall time commitment is likely 20 days in the first year as the Board gets established, decreasing to 10 days in the 2nd year.
Terms of Appointment
Board members serve for three years, renewable once for a maximum of six years.
