Organization Overview
Global Health Labs (‘GH Labs’) is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization created in 2020 by Gates Ventures (the private office of Mr. Bill Gates) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with an inspiring and ambitious mission to develop innovative solutions to address unmet needs in primary healthcare and the last mile.
Driven by a team of nearly 100 scientists, researchers, global health experts, and project managers, GH Labs develops innovative solutions to address critical technology gaps in low-resource environments with a focus on three primary areas:
  • Diagnostics (‘Dx’) for Low- and Middle-Income Countries (‘LMICs’);
  • Maternal, Newborn & Child Health (‘MNCH’) Tools for Primary Healthcare Centers; and
  • Primary Healthcare Center (‘PHC’) Hardware and Equipment.
Innovations incubated and developed by the GH Labs team so far include a new COVID-19 antigen test, a novel ultrasound technology suited to low-resource environments, and a vaccine cold chain container (Arktek). Working in close partnership with Gates Ventures and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in service of its programmatic strategies, GH Labs is poised to drive innovation and impact in global health in the years to come.


Opportunity Overview

GH Labs is launching the search for its inaugural Chief Executive Officer (‘CEO’) to lead the organization through an evolutionary phase of development to realizing  its vision and  successfully achieving intended strategic outcomes; additionally to harness the talent and immense technical capability of its staff and to balance a complex portfolio of projects to deliver against ambitious goals around product development, global public goods, and novel innovation in service of improvements in global health.  The CEO is fully accountable to the Board of GH Labs and responsible for the effective leadership and management of the organization.
The CEO will be a dynamic and inspirational leader with the ambition and vision to develop innovative technology solutions for low-resource environments and to raise GH Labs to even higher levels of excellence and delivery.
Working closely with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as a primary partner, the CEO will be required to build strong alliances and to leverage this partnership to build expertise and support around innovation.
The CEO will foster an environment that encourages  diversity of thought and cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural collaboration. The CEO must drive forward and create an environment to support the ethos of GH Labs and provide value based, clear and mission-orientated strategic and adaptive leadership.
The CEO will be committed to providing strong leadership to inspire, encourage and build confidence in GH Labs, its staff, systems, funders and partners and drive progress with passion, determination and vigor.
Success will be measured by the high impact global public goods developed for the field, and the degree to which GH Labs’ innovations are taken up and supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and other partners as a driver of impact.

Core Responsibilities

Leadership and Governance
  • Develop a highly functioning organization with the strategy, culture, and processes to drive innovation in global health.
  • Effectively engage with the Board of GH Labs to get the most out of board member contributions while supporting them to fulfil their duties and ensuring adherence to best governance practices.
  • Take overall responsibility for the management and administration of GH Labs.
  • Balance the different interests of various constituents and direct efforts to identify priority technologies for development to deliver maximum impact.
  • Lead efforts to continuously drive and assess the impact of GH Labs’ work.
  • Ensure GH Labs’ commitment to internal and external accountability, transparency, and effectiveness.
  • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout GH Labs’ work.
Organizational Management
  • Inspire and guide a strong leadership team that works together to effectively lead the organization toward reaching ambitious goals.
  • Balance a complex portfolio of research projects and innovations that meaningfully accelerates global health impact in Dx, MNCH, and PHC, engaging the knowledge and expertise of team members and partners to determine where to expand or reduce investment for the greatest impact.
  • Ensure the GH Labs team is consistently focused on and delivering against targets around product development, global public goods, and novel innovation for global health impact.
  • Foster a cohesive and collaborative operating environment that encourages the personal fulfilment and professional growth of staff at all levels.
  • Ensure clear lines of accountability and responsibility across the team, promoting and maintaining effective working relationships at GH Labs.
  • Steward the organization’s resources responsibly and in service of optimizing the portfolio of work of global health impact against strategy.
Stakeholder Management & Representation
  • Represent GH Labs to Gates Ventures, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and a variety of other partners with which GH Labs is collaborating.
  • Identify areas of opportunity and comparative advantage for GH Labs to work together with leaders of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation by drawing upon their strengths in service of overall health impact.
  • Build strong and effective relationships with key leaders at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) to understand the foundation’s strategies and identify where GH Labs can effectively deliver on technical innovation and shared outcomes for impact.
  • Maintain and strengthen relationships with senior executives in partner organizations ensuring open dialogue about the work from a long-term strategic perspective and in a detailed project-by-project context, explaining connections between organizations and the rationale behind decisions.

  • Competent decision maker and executor with demonstrated ability to balance resource trade-offs and manage a complex portfolio of projects and/or funding decisions.
  • Authentic management skills, with the ability to be flexible and adaptive to meet GH Labs’ needs.
  • High integrity with a commitment to good governance, transparency, and operational excellence.
  • Experience leading an R&D organization and/or a product development enterprise who has a demonstrated history of driving innovation, ideally in a scientific / technical environment through public goods and open-source methods.
  • Prior experience working in a non-profit context is a plus.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with a strong executive presence and presentation skills, and ability to explain the underlying assumptions and rationale behind decisions.
  • Experience partnering with an engaged Board is advantageous.
  • Global health expertise, research, and/or health product development experience preferred.
  • Culturally astute and aware. High emotional intelligence. Can see the world from multiple perspectives. Has true appreciation of global cultural contexts.

Qualifications & Experience

  • At least 15+ years of experience in roles of growing scope and responsibility with a track record of leading people and programs to deliver results; ideally in global health, product development and/or research.
  • Global experience and knowledge of/experience in low resource environments is highly desirable.
  • Advanced degree or a combination of equivalent academic training and experience gained in a relevant professional environment.
