Role purpose

Friendship requires a CEO who, together with the Founder and future Executive Chair and the Board, can help lead the organisation to new heights as its impact and reach significantly grow. Given Friendship’s history, working methodologies, and international structure, the CEO must deeply understand its mission and its core values of Integrity, Dignity, Justice, Quality, and Hope.


A CEO with senior leadership experience who embraces and models Friendship’s values will be able to lead the overall business development, establish a highly collaborative relationship with the Board of Directors, set a course for the company strategy, and provide inspired leadership and direction to the leadership team and the broader company to successfully achieve the company’s strategic and operational goals and objectives.


The CEO is expected to ensure Friendship's organisational effectiveness and business success. The CEO is a full-time position that reports to Friendship's Board of Directors and closely interacts with the Chair of the Board, and with the Chairs of the different FI entities.


The CEO will engage frequently with the Founder, Runa Khan, who will remain actively involved as the Chair of the Board. The board and the present Executive Director are dedicated to aiding and supporting the new CEO as they transition smoothly into their new role.


Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Collaborate with the Founder and the Board to establish and chart the company’s strategic direction, presenting the Board with carefully prepared, innovative short- and long-term strategic proposals and considerations.
  • Liaise with the individual members of the Boards of Directors to maximise their potential value to Friendship.
  • Lead efforts to implement strategic choices and monitor corporate performance in meeting strategic goals and targets, adjusting course as needed.
  • Lead company-wide strategic and operational planning in an inclusive and participatory way consistent with Friendship’s values.
  • Present regular reports on the status of the operations of Friendship Bangladesh to the Boards of Directors of Friendship International, Friendship Bangladesh and to staff.
  • Liaise with the Co-Chairs of Friendship International and the Chairs of the Friendship International entities to maximise operational alignment and efficiency among all Friendship entities.
  • Oversee all the operations of Friendship Bangladesh.
  • Oversee Friendship Bangladesh’s finances, ensuring adequate and sound funding for the mission and goals of the organisation.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, rules, regulations, and standards.
  • Work collaboratively, accept responsibility, be inclusive and motivate colleagues.


Model and Nurture Friendship's Values and Culture

  • Promote internal shared leadership, leadership development, and other expressions of team member ownership to ensure the organisation's strong current and future ownership and leadership.
  • Ensure diversity and inclusion (DEI) policies, principles, values, and behaviours are fully upheld, integrated, and operationalised across all Friendship's departments and functions.
  • Ensure the Leadership Team models the company's values and tracks and reports progress toward DEI objectives.
  • Facilitate updates to the values and culture as the company evolves in collaboration with the Leadership Team, the board, and the changing environment and external context.
  • Communicate with Friendship employees in a manner that reflects Friendship's values and culture and creates a safe and united workplace for all.


Results-Oriented Change Leadership

  • Lead and manage the change management process effectively to gain the confidence and trust of internal and external individuals in Friendship and its stakeholders.
  • Lead and empower cross-functional teams representing multiple stakeholders.
  • Lead the Friendship Bangladesh Management Team in problem resolution. Facilitate the development and succession of Management Team members.


Stakeholder Management

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the value to Friendship Bangladesh of the international network of pro bono contributors.
  • Oversee the Sectors'/CSUs' relations with the Government of Bangladesh.
  • Support the Chair and Partnership Development in developing and maintaining donor relationships.


Required Experience

Candidates are not required to have experience in all areas. We will consider a variety of candidate profiles with complementary expertise.


Experience and Qualifications

  • At least fifteen (15) years of successful and progressive experience, with at least five (5) years as a seasoned manager.
  • Demonstrated management and organisational skills to manage an organisation with over 7000 capable staff and/or volunteers, 6 sectors of services, and 18 depts of back-office services.
  • Demonstrated track record of superior leadership and people management skills, including excellent communication, interpersonal, and diplomatic skills, and the ability to effectively liaise with colleagues and donors in a diverse, multicultural, and fast-paced team environment.
  • Highly skilled in leading and facilitating progressive organisational change in a highly collaborative, participatory, and dynamic organisation.
  • Comfortable engaging with senior decision-makers in government and UN bodies at the national and international levels to form, nurture, strengthen, and sustain strategic partnerships.
  • Excellent communication and listening skills, a persistent, firm decision-maker who can inspire. A strong facilitator and negotiator.
  • Experience in business planning and setting strategic direction; strong track record in systems and systems thinking.
  • Sound capacity in HR and Finance, including knowledge of financial principles and HR practices.
  • Alignment with Friendship’s values and mission.



  • An MBA or graduate degree (with experience) in a related field, such as economics, finance, HR, public administration, or international relations.



  • Complete fluency in English and Bengali with excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate at multiple levels and across diverse disciplines and cultures.
