About
Role purpose
Reach Digital Health (formerly Praekelt.org) has had a Board of Directors in place for the past 13 years. The Reach Board serves as a link between the company and its stakeholders and every interaction with stakeholders presents opportunities to share the organization's culture, mission, accomplishments, and goals.
Following are some of the desired skills Reach seeks in its new Board members and would be valuable for the next steps of the organisation:
- Funder and Fundraising – Having knowledge of funders/ donors would be incredibly helpful in growing initial investments and having representation at the table when funders speak to each other. The new Board member will also help connect Reach to potential new funders and would have a deep understanding of the funding landscape.
- Implementation – Experience in running global/ regional NGOs, with knowledge of managing budgets and multi-country implementation would be helpful in connecting Reach to potential implementation partners in the space and in advising on the growth.
- Government Relationships – It is crucial for Reach to be able to speak with governments directly and to understand how best to work within their complex structures. A leader with strong understanding of the government landscape and has experience navigating these systems would be helpful.
- Platform – Experience in replication of a platform would be desirable to have. Reach believes in constantly working on improving its platform and technology.
Time Commitment from Board Members
- Board Members are requested to serve at least one term of three years when accepting an invitation to join the Reach Board, which can be extended for a further term of three years by mutual agreement.
- In terms of time commitment, the ask from the Board Members is to attend four annual board meetings, which are structured as follows:
- 3 remote quarterly board meetings of maximum 3 hours each;
- 1 annual in-person board meeting, which is usually over two days and usually held in Southern Africa.
- Board Members are also required to join one of the board committees (Finance or Impact), which will involve two committee meetings per year. These would take place remotely and will precede board meetings to ensure all agreed-upon decisions can be recorded and presented to the remainder of the Board by written consent resolutions.
- Board members may be called on for guidance or input at other times during the year, however, Reach appreciates that members are very busy and are always careful not to make unreasonable demands of their time.
Note – Although this would be an unpaid role, Reach will cover travel arrangements to attend in-person annual board meetings most likely in Southern Africa.
